GET TO KNOW ME

I'm Artturi Väänänen

I am a 21-year-old student based in Oulu, Finland, with a passion for electrical design and aviation. Working at VA Simulations has allowed me to combine these interests and develop my skills across multiple areas.

As co-founder of the company, I am involved in everything from website development and electrical design to soldering and hands-on building. Although VA Simulations is just one year old, I have been working on personal flight simulator projects since primary school, gradually expanding my knowledge to tackle increasingly complex challenges.

Last year, I started my studies at the University of Oulu, pursuing a degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering. I am excited to learn as much as possible in the coming years and hope to one day work for a large company while continuing to pursue my aviation and flight simulator hobbies.

Some of my projects:

Flight Simulator Autopilot Panel

The final product closely matches the real aircraft unit in both appearance and functionality, while costing only a fraction of the price of comparable commercial solutions.

The PCB measures 470 × 75 mm and includes over 200 backlighting LEDs, multiple displays, switches, buttons, and connection points. Decoupling and voltage regulation capacitors were implemented to improve stability and ensure reliable operation with varying power supplies.

My largest design project to date has been a Boeing 737 Autopilot (MCP) panel. Commercial units typically cost over €1000, so I decided to design and build my own from scratch.

I began the project by researching accurate dimensions and system functionality. Based on this research, I designed the complete PCB schematic and layout, ensuring correct component placement and electrical reliability.

Once the PCB design was finalized, I transitioned to CAD to design the enclosure and user interface. After several design iterations and prototype tests, the parts were manufactured and assembled.

The final result is a fully functional and accurate MCP panel, which is now integrated into my flight simulator.

The board requires voltage regulation to meet component datasheet specifications. I designed and implemented a buck converter using professional design tools to handle the required voltage regulation.

My design work

Microcontroller break-out-board

One of our company’s best-selling products is the Arduino Interface Card, designed to interface a microcontroller and LED controllers with user I/O devices.

I was responsible for the complete design and validation of the board. The functionality of the built-in RC filters was verified in our lab using oscilloscopes, and I also created the full technical documentation for the product.
